When I started practicing Bikram Yoga: September 19, 2011
Favorite Posture: Triangle!!! It’s one of the most challenging, but I feel the most benefit from it, in regards to my injuries.
Why I Practice
I can thank my former chiropractor for sending me to Bikram Yoga South Pasadena. In October of 2005 I was injured from a fight I was in while I was a Deputy Sheriff. I was knocked down to the ground and yanked around by the arm by a suspect I was escorting from a Courtroom to Jail Cell. As a result of this fight I injured my Neck, back, wrist and shoulder. The treatment for my injuries were always being delayed or denied by Worker’s comp. I had no idea how the Worker’s Comp system worked any my injuries continued to get worse. I was given many pain meds and Narcotics, but no plan or direction on how to get better or treat my pain in a more beneficial way. Finally the county Doctor said, I will not get any better. Soon after I was deemed unable to perform my duties as a Deputy Sheriff and was forced to medically retire.
I soon found a really good Chiropractor who was able to get me off most of my pain medications and teach me techniques to get stronger. Unfortunately, I still had many limitations. I also would have days where I would have to stay in bed for days for aggravating my injuries from doing everyday tasks (i.e. sweeping, mopping, carrying groceries etc.…)
I showed up at her office on Monday September 19, 2011 hutched over with pain shooting from my back down my legs. I close to tears from the pain. Her response was, “I can’t help you in this condition.” But she wrote the address to Bikram Yoga South Pasadena and said, “Go there now!”
I had “done” a yoga video one time in my life and I thought it was too “weird.” But that day I was desperate and I went.
I made it just in time for the 11:00 am class. My teacher was Ytuan. I explained to her why I was there and it was my first time. She took good care of me in class and made sure I was ok. She made sure I focused on proper alignment and took it easy.
I started going on a regular basis and I noticed many positive changes. Soon everyday tasks that I was unable to do, became doable. I felt like I was getting my life back. I even considered trying to be a Deputy again. But being 44 years old and chasing people, then fighting with them just didn’t seem that appealing anymore. Now I was on a new journey to something else great. Law enforcement was now a part of me that was over and I finally made peace with it, thankfully due to Bikram yoga.
I have made many new and great friends here at Bikram Yoga South Pasadena. I also encourage everyone I know to try it. As torturous and this practice can be, it’s the only activity that I have truly committed myself to and stuck to it. It’s truly healing in many ways. My only regret is that I wish I would have discovered it decades ago. However I’m a firm believer everything happens when it’s supposed to.
Things come into our lives for a reason, a season or FOREVER!!! Bikram Yoga will be one on my FOREVER’S!!!!
